Existing Condition & Challenges

Currently Exchange Road is part of the ring road, with one-way traffic circumnavigating the town centre. The environment along the road is noisy and hostile to pedestrians and cyclists. It is not easy to cross.

Aspirations & Potential 

To create a more attractive street character, with new crossings, creating a more equitable environment for all modes of transport, including pedestrians, cyclists and buses, and improving accessibility to the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists.

Precedents

Great Eastern Road, Stratford

• Generously scaled and colourful pedestrian crossing
• Segregated cycle lanes along the main road
• Traffic lights

Exhibition Road, South Kensington

• Priority given to pedestrians and cyclists for crossing at any point
• Flush surface with multi-modal carriageway
• Attractive environment created for cafes and restaurants to spill out into
